Travel and accommodation guide for Phuket Thailand

What to pack for Phuket?

When travelling to Phuket, you are most likely looking forward to spending a lot of time on the beaches and in the sea. Of course swimwear is a necessity as are beach clothes and cover ups such as sarongs for the ladies. To protect from the strong rays of the sun, take plenty of suntan cream and after sun lotion. Don`t forget plenty of books and magazines to while away the time while soaking up the sun. Beach towels, sun hats, sunglasses and insect repellent will complete your beach attire.

Smart clothes would be advised if you like dining out, but as this region experiences a hot and humid climate, light clothes made from natural fibres are recommended. This will help prevent irritation to your skin which may be caused by the heat.

Packing for your Phuket holiday

The climate in Thailand experiences periods of rainfall so you would be advised to pack a raincoat and umbrella. Although, it may rain, showers tend to be short and sharp and you will dry out quickly due to the heat. If you are intending on travelling between October and December then take some warm clothes so that you can cover up in the cooler weather. There are many places locally in Thailand which offer laundering services, so if you want to travel light, then you can get some clothes washed while you are there. This is also a good destination for buying clothes especially tailor made shirts and suits and hosts lots of local markets. Be warned though, you may end up taking back more than you left with!

Snorkelling and diving are popular leisure activities in Phuket. If you are an experienced diver, you may wish to pack your own diving gear for use such as goggles, masks and wetsuits. If not, then don`t worry as you can either buy it while you are there or hire equipment from local providers. Don`t forget to pack your camera and underwater ones will be particularly useful if you enjoy diving.

If you plan to travel around Thailand whilst visiting Phuket, then make sure you take a map of Thailand with you. For long distances, many choose to travel by motorbike. Hire from a reputable agency and ensure that you also wear a well fitting and good quality helmet. Make sure you pack your travel documents including insurance documentation in case of any emergencies.

Good quality footwear is also recommended when riding motorcycles. As for other footwear, sandals and flip flops are staple items, although there are some cheap retail outlets selling these too. If you fancy taking part in some extreme sports or sporting activities, then you will need appropriate footwear such as DC skate shoes.
